Living life to the full

Are you going through a divorce? Have you lost your job? Are you struggling with debt? Problems, problems, and more problems…circumstances seem overwhelming and you barely make it everyday. Hardly keeping your head above water, just surviving. Is this the life you were dreaming of when you were younger, full of hopes and expectations, when life had not yet bruised you and weakened you. And yet you see it everywhere : “live life to the full!”, on the bookshelves in the libraries, on television, even in your local christian bookshop : “Be a successful husband”, “7 steps to a victorious life”, and other very promising titles who contrast with the sad reality of your situation.

Can you change your circumstances ? Maybe. But perhaps it’s time to change the way you see them! Remember real change starts within yourself. You see, it’s not so much about what you are going through than how you perceive it. Let me explain : life throws stuff at us that sometimes, even with the best preparation, we won’t be able to withstand. It’s a fact, we do not have control on anything, and to word it politely, “life happens”. But one thing you can do, if you cannot control your life circumstances, is to change the way you react to them.

This evening, I was thinking about the phrase “fullness of life”, or “living life to the full”. What the heck does that mean. Like you, I always though that it would involve some kind of enjoyment, or thrill, like jumping of an airplane with a parachute or practising some extreme sport. Living fully, making the most of every opportunity, finding satisfaction in life. What else? Perhaps taking risks, not being afraid to be what we always dreamt we could be. Hmmm, these are all very good answers, but how does this really work, I mean really, for me, today?

Let’s put it this way : the best definition I found so far to what it really means to live life to the full is the following :

“To accept life in its full measure, with everything it may bring, whether goood or bad.”

Dull? Boring? Not so. Again, let me elaborate.

In our modern societies, we no longer know what it means to fight for our survival. Wars are far away and are dealt with by professional armies, no one really needs to protect themselves and their immediate family as we live in relatively safe neighbourhoods, and the huge majority of us does not have to struggle to put food on their tables. That’s quite simplistic, but it’s a fact. Modern men and modern women in our western societies, are, I would say, quite comfortable, and have a very low element of risk in their lives, that’s my point. Therefore, most of us live a very boring existence. We go through the motions. Here, I don’t need to expand because as you read these lines you know exactly what I mean. In France they call it “métro-boulot-dodo”, literally “train-work-sleep”. Like machines, we live a mechanical and repetitive life, and one day we cease to function, and we call it death.

But is it the only way? Does it have to be this way?

Let me return to my first point. It’s not so much about the pain you endure but it’s got a lot to do with your reaction to it, and your perception of it.  Why do we live such boring, dull, dead existences? According to me, because we run away from pain. “Once biten, twice shy”, says the english idiom. All of us have experienced pain in one way or another. The reality is that it is something we want to avoid. And it is legitimate. But by doing so, believe me, we refuse to live a life that is worth living. As we protect ourselves from pain, we build our life around an idol that is called “a better life”, or “a happier life”, but by seeking comfort, we end up finding it, in the shape of a coffin, where we lie dead although we live. Or rather, we think we live a life but in fact, we are dead.

To me “living life to the full”, is choosing to accept that our journey on earth will not be without trouble. As we accept this reality, our experience of suffering will be more intense, but so will be our experience of joy. As we open ourselves to reality and decide to face it, we will be made alive and life will regain its flavour.

I know, this is not your usual motivational talk. But think about it. You only live once on earth, and” in this life”, Jesus told us,” you will have trouble, but take heart”, he also said, “for I have overcome the world”. To those who believe in Him, he has given the privilege to be called the children of God. We have assurance of eternal life, we are but pilgrims on this planet. So what? Does that mean we ought to be miserable until he returns, or calls us home? Absolutely not! With a heavenly perspective we can approach our earthly life with more clarity. You need money? Good! It means you’re still alive and kicking! It means you have dreams and aspirations! You are going through a divorce? Do you feel rejected, or like a failure? This is how you choose to perceive it my friend. It could also be a fresh start. These years are not wasted, they have made you who you are now. Take the pain, let it sink deep down your throat like a strong liquor, but allow it to fortify your spirit. What does not kill you makes you stronger. You are building some muscle, you are being refined in the fiery furnace. The book of James tells us to consider it pure joy, when we go through various trials. Why? Because they will make you more like Christ! As you experience pain, you can either become better or bitter, it’s your choice! But if you allow the holy spirit to break you, and to shape you, to remake you, you will be transformed into a new person, more compassionate, wiser, stronger and above all closer to God.

Next time when you see pain coming your way, don’t hide or run away but welcome it, and allow the Holy Spirit to show you the way. It will often be in times of suffering that the intimacy with your creator will be sweeter. And remember, there are no real problems in this life, only opportunities for Grace.

People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success.

Change your thoughts and you change your world.

How you think about a problem is more important than the problem itself – so always think positively.

Practice loving people. It is true that this requires effort and continued practice, for some are not very lovable, or so it seems – with emphasis on “seems.” Every person has lovable qualities when you really learn to know him.

Cut the “im” out of impossible, leading that dynamic word standing out free and clear – possible.

Always remember that problems contain values that have improvement potential.

Problems are to the mind what exercise is to the muscles, they toughen and make strong.

The “as if” principle works. Act “as if” you were not afraid and you will become courageous, “as if” you could and you’ll find you can. Act “as if” you like a person and you’ll find a friendship.

Go forward confidently, energetically attacking problems, expecting favorable outcomes.

Anybody can do just about anything with himself that he really wants to and makes up his mind to do. We are all capable of greater things than we realize.

When you wholeheartedly adopt a ‘with all your heart’ attitude and go all out with the positive principle, you can do incredible things.

One way to become enthusiastic is to look for the plus sign. To make progress in any difficult situation, you have to start with what’s right about it and build on that.

Life’s blows cannot break a person whose spirit is warmed at the fire of enthusiasm.

Our happiness depends on the habit of mind we cultivate. So practice happy thinking every day. Cultivate the merry heart, develop the happiness habit, and life will become a continual feast.

How to control your thoughts

It is a fact, it all starts in your mind. You wake up in the morning, tired, you’d rather stay in bed, and a heavy weight is upon you. A strange feeling of sadness, but you do not understand why you feel this way. Suddenly this dark cloud overshadows your thoughts and the darkness thickens. You feel lonely and empty. Even finding the strength to carry on seems overwhelming. And yet you do it, you get up, get ready for work, take the bus, the train, grab a coffee and a newspaper on your way to the office and gradually, the malaise vanishes, or rather fades away into the background. Workmates, friends, acquaintances, being socially acceptable seem to ease the pain and chatting away gives a momentary relief. But it is when you less expect it that a thought comes to your mind and stabs you in the heart. Suddenly you feel bad again, robbed from your happiness, and you cannot do anything. You seem to be controlled by your thoughts and your emotions.

Today I would like to spend a bit of time talking about the fact that we have the capacity to control our thoughts rather than being controlled by them. We are what we think. The thought patterns we entertain in our mind end up directing our life. You would know the old saying, that “a thought reaps an action, an action reaps a habit, a habit reaps your character and your character reaps your destiny”. What you will become starts with what you think. Think negatively and you can be sure that you will see a negative outcome in your life. But thank God, the opposite is true and I invite you to take this step today. Set in motion the course of your life by what you think. If you don’t understand this, you will allow circumstances to direct your life. You have to learn to rise above your circumstances. Not only to keep your head above water and barely make it, but to walk on water and overcome every obstacle, this is the abundant, the fruitful life! Do you want it ? Start changing the way you think, and do it today ! It takes 30 seconds to make an adjustement. Decide to change today and you will take the necessary steps to make it happen. If you just go with the flow, you are heading towards a big disaster, it’s time to take control of your life!

Your mind is a real battlefield, there is a war going on inside of you. What side will you be on? If you entertain negativity, it is likely that it will win the battle of your mind. No, you are in control and it should not happen. Often we conform to the thought patterns that we inherited from our parents, many will argue that we are the product of our upbringing, our education. There are also all the wounds and the pain that life may bring, these too have a direct influence on how we think and what we think. Words spoken against us, by our family, our teachers, people we grew up with, these words have acted like seeds germinating in us; fully grown they produce a bitter fruit in us. Well, it’s time to uproot this bad tree, it’s time to plow the land of your mind and to sow good seeds, that will produce good fruit, and it’s not too late for that!

It is essential to understand how you see yourself. Many people suffer from low self-esteem because of painful experiences such as rejection or abuse. But most of the time we don’t even know why we form these negative thoughts. The reason why we fail to identify the origin of negative behavior or negative thinking is that most of the time this origin is spiritual.

First of all, I would like to clarify one thing. The symptoms we have mentioned above like sadness, depression, low self-esteem, result from a disease of the soul. Until the soul is restored, there is no hope of complete healing. I will therefore speak here at two different levels. I will address the regenerated man as well as the unregenerated one. Let me explain. There is a spiritual principle that needs to be understood. The world we live in is a broken and fallen world. It does not function the way it should. It is broken, it has lost its integrity, it is corrupted. It is the spiritual principle of the Fall we are talking about. In the beginning everything was good and in tune with the divine. Man and woman lived together in harmony between themselves and with the divinity. They where whole, complete, spiritually, emotionally and physically. It is after breaking this spiritual principle that they have fallen and taken with them the rest of the created order. The relationship has been broken, a gap has been created between mankind and the divine being. By losing our connection with the spiritual realm we also have lost touch with ourselves. We cannot connect with our emotions the way we want to. That is why even before thinking of learning how to deal with your thoughts and emotions you have to realign yourself with the spiritual reality, there is no other way. It is time to understand that the invisible, the spiritual realm, is in fact more real than the world we can see and touch. Furthermore, it is at the root of everything. So if you want to live a victorious life, you’d better start living your life acknowledging this reality.

Once reconciled with God, man can be fulfilled and be free to be everything he dreamed he could be. Now it is possible to live in a new freedom, the chains are broken, but he needs to learn how to walk in this new freedom. Perhaps are you in the same situation. You have experienced the new birth, you have been set free, received a new spirit and yet you are still living in bondage, prisoner of your fears, taken as hostage by your thoughts.

It is time to replace these old forms of thinking with new ones, to renew your mind. Stop considering yourself a failure, stop thinking that if it did not work in the past it will never work for you. Do not dwell in the past, there is something new ahead of you! The past can no longer dictate you what to do or what to think. The old has gone and the new has come, all things have become new!

You have to start shifting the focus from your perspective to God’s perspective. You have to see yourself the way he sees you. And it is, like his child. You are loved, accepted, forgiven and you have received favor. The “reality” of your circumstances seem to say otherwise, but it is because your present circumstances are the result of the thoughts you have been thinking up to this point. Change the way you think and you will see that the world around you will change too.

It is time to start scanning your thoughts, not to allow anything negative or destructive to dictate you. It is time to say “Stop! I don’t want to think like that anymore!” and to replace this “stinking thinking” with new pure, positive, constructive thoughts.

It is all by Grace and if you are not yet a child of God I would encourage you to take a step of faith towards him. If you focus on how big he is you will soon find out that your problems are not so impossible to overcome.

May you find in Jesus this hope. He is the only one who promises a water that truly quenches your thirst, the living water. You can only go so far trying to achieve these things yourself, but it is only with the help of the Holy Spirit you will truly experience freedom and fullness of life. If you are searching, I would say to you, stop searching, the answer is yes and the time is now. He is the way, the truth and the life. Make a step of faith and get to know him today.

Surely, there is a way

I find that all these websites on personal development, self-improvement, motivation, have one thing in common, at the center is the ego, in fact, the exaltation of the ego. What they offer seems attractive at first, but in the end is dangerous, and even destructive. Let me explain.
You find at the core of the belief-system that supports these types of teachings a dangerous ideology. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a better person, to improve your performance, to generally be a happier, healthier and more fulfilled person. Unfortunately, too often these ideals are presented in a way that is so centered on self-fulfillment and self-satisfaction that it is somewhat damaging to us and to others.
Nothing new under the sun, as these so-called New Age teachings are not new at all but find their roots in ancient philosophies and paganism. Buddhism, Zen are at the basis of this movement that is better known under the term New-Age. In a nutshell, they shift the focus from the Creator to the Creature. Since there is no Personal Infinite God, I am free to worship the elements, or the created order. Sun worship or this recent exaltation of Nature are linked in a sense. I become part of this creation with which I can connect. There is a spirituality that lies on how to tap into these infinite sources of energy. The bottom line here is : what can I get for my life? What is there for me? Being in tune with “Mother Nature”, or learning or to tap into fields of “energy” to increase my power and influence over others, these are recurrent themes that you’ll find on these websites.
What it really means is this : how can I become more powerful, more successful, how can I dominate others, or can I become my own God? There is no God, they say in their hearts, or rather, I am God, I am my own God.
It is the age-old lie of the serpent of old : “you will be like God, you eyes shall be opened.”
Genesis 3.4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
It’s an old lie and yet we still believe it. Like Gods! Able to become what we always wanted to be. We will have knowledge, we will be “enlightened”, we will have wisdom, power, authority. But seriously, who would trust a snake? Are we ignorant of his schemes? The snake cannot and will not be our friend, sooner or later it will bite, and the terrible effects of its venom will be felt. We’ll pay the price for allowing the snake to stay a little bit too close; really we should have crushed its head, but its voice was so seductive, so hypnotic, and it stirred up all these desires in us that we waiting to be awakened.
And yet we still have this burning desire on the inside. Surely, there must be more than this, more to life than the mundane, the material and natural realm. There is a craving inside of us for a deeper spiritual fulfillment, a desire for eternity placed within us. How to find a way out? Who would deliver of this wretched body of mine? Outside I’m decaying but inside something is alive that doesn’t want to die. Eternity! There must be something behind the veil, surely there is a way.
We’ll explore these possibilities in this blog and will offer an alternative voice to these empty claims. There is a way. Follow us on our journey.

Steve Pavlina and personal development, his dangerous influence

I write this note and in fact, start this new thread on my blog in reaction to a phenomenon I believe to be extremely dangerous in the United States and indeed, across the world. I might just have a different perspective on it, being a foreigner, a frenchman, but it just doesn’t seem right to me. That literally millions of young americans would flock to this website of Mr Steve Pavlina and others of these so called self-development sites just astonishes me. But is is the sad reality, that these young adults, not having any vision for their life, no real values to lean on, no hope, would believe anything this guru would tell them. It’s incredible how people wait for someone else to show them the way. The reality is that they are completely lost, and therefore need direction. This position makes them very vulnerable and they listen to any authoritative voice. If you don’t have a vision for your life, if you do not see where you want to go and who you want to be, it won’t be long before somebody else dictates you what to do. Often it’s more subtle than that, you really think you are using you free will when in fact you are just being influenced by someone speaking into your life. The website I’m mainly talking about here, you can check it out for yourself, is called www.stevepavlina.com, and it has an enormous success.

Steve is a successful businessman who has built his fame and fortune by becoming this “guru” of self-development. In other words, he tells people how to live their lives and they love it. What’s disturbing in his whole approach is that he is a clever man who knows how to manipulate others. Very critical towards all religions, he has, in a sense, created his own. It’s in line with the adoration of the ego, the self-centeredness and the me, me-ism.” It’s all about me-me-me “. My happinness, my well-being, my development, my pleasure, my satisfaction…nothing new under the sun…

Very old philosophy in fact, and it’s called disobedience, rebellion, it’s called carnality. What is really is, is the rejection of a God who created us and the disparition of any accountability towards him. I am my own God. The problem here is that when people stop believing in God, they end up believing not in nothing, but rather in anything. The so-called modern philosophies, the new techniques, the new-age, are not new at all. In the old days they were called paganism, idol-worship. Even the generation of Abraham believed in the Gods of the Sun, the Earth, the Sea. It all boils down to one thing : worshipping the creature instead of the creator. It is a fascination for what is created, but the author of life is brushed aside like an obsolete theory.

In what spiritual state are these people? In a desperate state, ready to drink at any well. There is a water that can quench their thirst. If they drink of this water of life, they will never thirst again. If you are going to be influenced, which you would be, whether you like it or not, be influenced by the right power. There is a power over your life that controls you and will lead you to destruction. But there is another power that is gentle, and if you learn its ways, and how to surrender, you will flourish in every area of your life. Follow me on this journey and you will not regret it. This is only my first post on this topic but I am planning to write a lot more. Please feel free to leave comments, we’re gonna work together for a new voice to be heard. Why would we stay silent when the wolves have come to steal the sheeps, when the thieves come to kill, steal and destroy? We want to be this oasis in the spiritual desert, a well that will satisfy and lead to life in aboundance. I can’t wait until my next post. Coming soon.
